Even when it comes to weight loss, males and females were not created equal. Not that we want to compete but it is frustrating to know that men lose weight faster than women do. In other words, weight loss for women is a completely different ball game than weight loss for men.
Just think of the discouraging times when you and your guy ate the same foods and exercised together only to discover that he was slimming and toning down much faster than you were. And, if by chance you both stopped your weight loss program, you would have gained weight much faster than your male counterpart.
Well, don’t blame yourself. There is a biological reason for this discrepancy and it is simply because you are a woman, not because you did or are doing something wrong.
The problem is that until recently no one has even entertained the possibility that weight loss for women is not the same as weight loss for men. On the contrary, all diets and weight loss programs were generic. They did not differentiate between males and females and not a single one addressed the uniqueness of the female metabolism.
This all-inclusive approach to diets is the primary reason why most of the diets do not work well for women.
Research led nutritionist John Barban to unravel the missing link and after years of preparation he finally developed a diet that specifically caters to weight loss for women.
Let me share with you a few ideas that John and his team shared with me.
Why Weight Loss For Women Has To Be Addressed Differently
Males and females have to deal with different issues when it comes to many aspects of their body. Weight loss and fat loss is no exception.
The main reason for these differences is the hormonal make-up or hormonal environment between the two genders.
The primary difference when it comes to weight loss boils down to a hormone called leptin. It controls 100% of our ability to burn fat. This hormone controls appetite, metabolism and it is a key factor when it comes to losing and gaining pounds and inches.
Leptin levels are very different in males and females and it is this hormonal difference that dictates how the different genders lose weight. Let me explain…
High levels of leptin speed up your metabolism and signal your body to burn fat. On the other hand, low levels of this hormone have the opposite effect, namely slowing down your metabolism and signaling your body to store fat.
Interestingly, it has been discovered that women have twice as much leptin in their bodies than men do. So naturally, one would expect that women have twice as much fat burning capabilities.
Unfortunately for us, women, it is not so. Research has shown that females may be as much as 3 times less responsive to leptin’s fat burning signals than males are.
To add insult to injury, when dieting, the leptin levels in women drop lower and drop faster than leptin levels in men do. This rise and fast fall of the hormone causes your metabolism to slow down and as you know, slow metabolism will cause you to plateau or even gain weight.
Males do not experience these highs and lows related to leptin levels. On the contrary, their leptin levels rise and fall within a relatively small and predictable range. This makes it easier for men to lose weight without any crashes and rebounds. In other words, weight loss in men is pretty straight forward.
I don’t want to go into too much detail of this leptin phenomenon. John Barban created an awesome video that explain this principle as well as his groundbreaking approach to weight loss for women. To get the “nuts and bolts” of the story click on the banner to play the video.
So essentially what it boils down to is that the dramatic swings of leptin in females require a new approach when designing weight loss diets for women. The nutritionists need to embrace the fact that weight loss diets for women must account for and correct the swings of this hormone in our bodies.
Women need a strategy throughout their program to prevent the leptin crashes. And, that is exactly what John Barban and his team came up with. This strategy is called metabolic override. In other words, it is a strategy that overrides the leptin crashes.
This simple yet an extremely powerful strategy holds the key to unleashing your full fat burning potential and levels the playing field between the two genders when it comes to weight loss.
And, ladies that sounds like a win-win scenario to me!
